"Where are we going?" Benji asked. "I don't know" I said, "go towards the mountains lets see if we can find some mushrooms or a house." We drove through away from the sea and into the big town and then headed out to the countryside as we were going through the round about I said, no, keep going and take that next turn instead. "This isn't the mountains!" he said, "this is the Corbieres. " We have a joke about a town in the Corbieres called Bizenet, it's a little unknown village, but all roads seem to say this way to Bizenet. Even my husbands late father used to joke with us, "do you know the way to Bizenet?" So we drove through, it took two seconds. Nothing for sale, but the beautiful crypt teased me with its roundness. We headed out of Bizenet (on one of the six roads that lead to Bizenet) and pasted a gorgeous also not well known monastery. We past fields of almond trees and of course vines and vines. My husband drives fast, he saw the snow capped Pyrenees in the horizon and wanted to climb elevation so we would have a chance to find morels. The grove of elm and other deciduous trees by the monastery would have been perfect mushroom picking, but he didnt hear my plees to stop. After a few minutes we just happened to be at the lovely winery where we had bought our wine for our wedding (July 2004). We stopped and bought a bottle to celebrate this summer with. I remember the white wine having a romantic label and a slight hint of lilac (my favorite flower) in the bottle. It ended up winning a gold medal that year. Not a surprise since it had been winning wine making medals for years. "Let's go home." Benji said. So we turned around and started to retrace our route home when at a fork in the road, I saw a homemade sign for eggs, ducks and cochons (pigs) "Turn here!" I eed from the back seat where I was hunched into a ball because my back was hurting so much. We found the farmer's neice outside hanging laundry next to their cow. The dark haired niece who told us her story with a strong southern accent also informed us that her uncle and the rest were off working and that the farm stand is only open from 6pm to 8pm. She said that they sold vegetables, honey and cheeses as well as eggs and meat from their animals. We were in the middle of no where. Only farm land and grapevines. As far as the eye could see. "Let keep driving down this road, I like that way it feels," I said as I looked up at the ancient green glass bulbs on the electrical poles. We found a wooded glen and parked the car off road on a path. track We headed into a small forest with a tangle of blackberry vines and in flower trees. I poked around for mushrooms, the ground was wet and littered with Fall's decomposing leaves. No morels, but the fun that we had running around and the views of the vineyards. "I love this place." I said enthusiastically. Amaya smiled and laughed riding on her dads shoulders. Benji said, "I do too." When we got home, I went to check if any new properties have been listed on-line as I usually do each night while I cook dinner. A new listing popped up. Lo and behold. A rustic ruin, a real stone ruin (with a decent roof and four walls Benji's requirements) from 18th century had just been listed. It's in total disrepair inside and has no windows, but it's as big as our house now and has an equal sized garden and is so cheap that we could buy it in cash almost. (The work would cost three or four times the buying price and that scares us a lot). But where is it? The ad didn't say. "Call, call, call!" I jumped up and down asking my doubting husband who only saw a pile of rocks in the photo. He called the agent whose office was in the Corbieres somewhere. "Yes, yes, I understand it needs a lot of work, but it has a permit of habitation already, ok good" I heard my husband say. "How far is it from here he asked," "oh, less than 45 minutes." "What the name of the closest village?" He was quiet as the person on the other side explained and I stirred our pumpkin soup for dinner. "It's on *that* road that we were on." Benji said as he hung up the phone with a smile. We made an appointment to go look at it with the real estate next Wednesday. We are meeting him at the post office across the street from our "wedding" winery. But I think that I could find it myself since something lead us down that path already. **update in 2009, our house is about a mile from this road, that road, it was the house for us. goldstashforcash-goldfeverad Gold Stash for Cash presents Gold Fever Days- The largest gold buying event in the history of Kansas City.
